Tailor-made chemotherapy, the selection of effective chemotherapy based on evaluation of biomarkers, can improve the clinical outcome of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).We have found that 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-derived agents, such as UFT and S-1, are effective for tumors with a low expression of thymidylate synthase (TS).In addition, a low excision repair cross-complementing 1 (ERCC1) gene expression is associated with a better response to cisplatin and a better survival of cancer patients receiving combination chemotherapy using cisplatin.Overexpression of ribonucleotide reductase subunit M1 (RRM1) gene is associated with resistance to gemcitabine and a poor survival of NSCLC patients receiving Gemcitabine.Furthermore, mutations of the epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene are associated with the responsiveness to specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors of EGFR, such as Gefitinib and Erlotinib.
