Studies on the electrodeposition of aluminum on common steel substrate from molten salts based on chlorides were quite extensive. However, there was very little work of deposition aluminum on stainless steel substrates. The present study was designed to evaluate the properties of electrodeposited aluminum layers on 316L stainless steel substrate by using a molten salts based on chloride. As a base electrolyte, ternary AlCl3-NaCl-KCl mixtures were used.316L stainless steel sheets with an effective area of approximately 3 cm2 were used as a cathode. The anode was an aluminum sheet 99.99 %Al.The electrolysis was carried out in the temperature range of 130-220 ℃.The cathodic current density varied from 0.5 to 14 Adm-2.The morphology of the aluminumlaver was examined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
