Metallo-supramolecular chemistry has been used to generate cationic supramolecular helicates possessing promising anticancer and antimicrobial activity.It has been hypothesized that binding to DNA is responsible for this behavior.For instance, dinuclear iron(Ⅱ) supramolecular helicates, such as [Fe2L3]4+ (L =C25H20N4), bind noncovalently in the major groove, causing remarkable DNA coiling and unwinding, and show preferential binding to alternating purine-pyrimidine sequences.
