This paper presents the system design and control strategy (operation modes) of a PV powered micro smart grid.The micro grid consists of a 75kW generator,three PV arrays of 30kWp capacity each and a battery back-up.The three PV arrays are installed in different locations so that the correlation between their power outputs is kept low,irrespective of the meteorological conditions.The operation modes of the generator,the PV arrays and the battery back-up are controlled and adapted to the time-dependent variability of both,the load profile and the irradiance conditions.The aim is to reduce the run-hours of the diesel generator (to save on fuel consumption) and to minimise the size of the battery back-up (to save on capital expenditure).The proposed optimised system design and control strategy eventually leads to lower levelised cost of electricity (LCOE).
