Natural and anthropogenic changes in climate and global biogeochemistry will presumably alter the atmospheric inputs of aerosols containing macro-and micro-nutrients to the ocean,which may cause changes in planktonic productivity,resulting in altered carbon partitioning.Therefore,estimating nutrient deposition rates,predicting the subsequent response of marine biota and understanding associated feedbacks are major challenges for the SOLAS community.One of the compelling questions arising from this complex schema is the role of heterotrophic bacteria,which can constitute up to 50% of the total particulate organic carbon in open ocean waters (Fuhrman et al.1989).
