Sorrels cement has been investigated to solidify Cr3+ or Ni2+ in water medium.The setting time, compressive strength, water resistance, and leaching toxicity of Sorrel s cement solidified products with Cr3+ or Ni2+ have been studied comprehensively to assess the applicability of Sorrel s cement in industrial waste water treatment.XRD, TG, FTIR, and SEM have been used to analyze Sorrel s cement solidified products with Cr3+ or Ni2+.The results show that solidifying Cr3+ or Ni2+inhibits the hydration process of Sorrel s cement solidified products and the formation of 5Mg(OH)2· MgCl2· 5H2O (5 phase) which is the main strength phase in Sorrel s cement, and consequently leads to the reduction of compressive strength of Sorrels cement from 136 MPa to 67 MPa, which is still far more than the lowest strength in the standard (7 MPa).Additionally, water resistance of cement solidified products also meets the specified requirements in the related standard.The leaching toxicity of Cr3+ or Ni2+ from Sorrel s cement solidified products has been evaluated.The highest leaching concentration is only 0.110 mg/L for Cr3+ and 0.112 mg/L for Ni2+, respectively from the solidified products, which indicates that Sorrel s cement solidified products with Cr3+ or Ni2+ has a low enough leaching toxicity.
