有鳞类爬行动物的胚胎发育可以在体外(卵生物种)或者母体内(卵胎生物种)完成,这两种不同繁殖模式的胚胎发育所需能源均来自于母体最初对每个卵细胞的卵黄分配。为了缓冲胚胎发育环境的不可预测性,母体通常分配较多的剩余卵黄给后代,使得幼体出生时伴有小部分剩余卵黄,在爬行动物中这种现象很多见。剩余卵黄用于新生幼体的早期生长和生命维持。
