Question Does kinesio taping make an effect on patients with knee osteoarthritis?Design Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.Participants People were diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis.Intervention Kinesio taping versus sham taping or no intervention.Outcome measures The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score. Results Nine identified studies with 435 participants met the inclusion criteria.Compared with sham taping or no intervention, kinesio taping improved short-term VAS score by a moderate and significant amount (SMD-0.99, 95% CI-1.48 to-0.50, I2 =76%), long-term VAS score by a moderate and significant amount (SMD-0.54, 95% CI-0.89 to-0.19, I2 =0%), and long-term WOMAC score by a moderate and significant amount (SMD-3.11, 95% CI-5.31 to-0.91,I2 =69%).However, pooled estimates from four studies showed no significant effects of kinesio taping improved short-term WOMAC score (SMD 0.43, 95% CI-7.48 to 8.34, I2 =96%).
