SimonIsCoolIn Lab-on-a-Chip systems, Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) detection is still the most widely applied detection technique, and the high price of the lasers(S2,000-$20,000+) often restricts a research group to the use of a single excitation wavelength.The use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) (price $1.00) as excitation sources makes changing excitation and emission wavelengths of the LIF set-up as simple and cheap as changing filter sets in microscopy, with filters for most popular fluorescent dyes available at very reasonable prices.With an experimental set-up allowing for the replacement of the red diode laser with an LED, a direct comparison between the different light sources could be achieved.The LODs reported here are calculated in comparison studies using this identical optical set-up which is an important improvement in comparison with previous studies where separate optical filtration systems were used.
