The liver plays an important role in maintaining glucose and energy homeostasis by regulating gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, as well as mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS).Maternal malnutrition affects hepatic metabolic homeostasis in offspring, yet the mechanisms remain elusive. In this study,14 primiparous purebred Meishan sows were fed either standard-(SP, 12% crude protein) or low-protein (LP;6% crude protein) diets throughout gestation, and the hepatic expression and transcriptional regulation of lucose6-phosphatase (G6PC) and mitochondrial DNA-encoded OXPHOS genes were analyzed in newborn piglets.Maternal low protein diet significantly decreased blood glucose levels in males, which was associated with increased hepatic G6PC mRNA expression and enzyme activity. This male-biased activation was accompanied by lower glucocorticoid receptor (GR) binding and hypomethylation of the G6PC promoter.
