Objective: Malignant gliomas are the most common primary intracranial tumor.Ionizing radiation (IR) is the most effective therapy for gliomas, but the resistance of glial tumor cells to irradiation limits the success of this treatment.Multiple mechanisms have been proposed to be associated with radioresistance in gliomas.Autophagy is a lysosome-dependent degradative pathway that is frequently activated in tumor cells treated with chemotherapy or irradiation.Radiation-induced autophagy has been suggested to function as a protective cellsurvival mechanism against therapeutic stress and cause resistance to IR.However, the molecular basis for this prosurvival function remains unclear.Thus, the function of autophagy in rat glioma cell line C6 in response to X-irradiation was examined.
