Many countries have identified rural suicide as a major public health concern, yet suicide research on epidemiology, service utilization and prevention tends to focus on urban areas, resulting in a conceptualization of suicide which may not be applicable to rural populations (Hirsh, 2006).To address the issue of rural suicide prevention, in June 2009, researchers at the University of Toronto and Tsinghua University, Beijing, China held a planning conference funding by Canadian Institutes of Health Research entitled, "Improving Rural Mental Health Care in China and Canada to Prevent Suicide".
