Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is believed to be as high as 90% in men aged 50 to 80 years old.A major cause for LUTS in this population is BPH-induced partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO).PBOO is associated with hyprtrophy of the detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) to compensate for the increased force required to expel the urine againsthe obstrucion. In some cases, the bladder is severely dysfunctional (decompensated) despite detrusor hypertrophy.Reversal of the PBOO by surgery fails to recover the bladder dysfunction.
