The typical total porosity and porosity size distribution of crushed natural and recycled aggregates are at the origin of both higher and slower water absorptions compared to the one of natural rounded aggregates. In this paper, we study in quantitative details the impact of the initial moisture state of these aggregates and of the resulting water absorption on fresh mortars yield stress evolution along with compressive strength. Our results suggest that the standard mix design methods currently used to take into account aggregates water absorption (i.e.by correcting the amount of mixing water) are not suitable for crushed natural and recycled aggregates and result in the production of different materials with different properties.
