朱熹的《女戒》虽然仅仅留下来一篇提纲,但是它以简要的方式总括了宋代理学对当时妇女在社会和家庭中生活地位的理论认识,而主张妇女回归家庭是其《女戒》思想的主要内容。与班昭的《女戒》相比,朱熹《女戒》在内容上更加突出了“讲学”和“俭质”的时代特色以及它们对于当好家庭妇女的价值向导作用。此外,该提纲还从理论方面比较系统地规定了作为“家庭妇女”的一些必要条件,因而本文通过阐释朱熹《女戒》思想的实质无疑有利于学界更加深入和更加科学地理解和把握南宋理学与宋代以降中国古代妇女地位变化之间的相互关系。
