Recent research in the field of educational technologies have seen investigations in the emergent field of learning analytics,as analytical methods and techniques were deployed to assist instructors in teaching and students in learning within educational settings. The application of learning analytics in online discourse analysis has provided exciting opportunities to analyze and understand how students learn through discourse.Yet,the success of learning analytics lies in the degree of adoption by the implementer and impact on the audience that the analytics was designed for.In this paper, discourse analytics was adopted in a study of knowledge building lessons attended by graduate students in a higher education setting. An analysis was conducted on four weeks of knowledge building discourse to understand changes in learning behaviors of students, based on analytics results presented to the students. The findings showed a significant increase in build-on of ideas, keyword usage across multiple lessons and presence of promising ideas relevant to the discourse community.Interviews with the students revealed that the visualizations and analytics results of discourse increased the visibility of students' contributions and provided greater clarity on their roles as a contributor and knowledge builder in the community.Instructors were also encouraged to further invest effort into the adoption and application of learning analytics for improving work and ideas within an idea-centric knowledge building discourse.
