A simple and cost-effective route was used successfully for large-scale synthesis of highly hydrophobic and oleophilic chitin sponge through a freeze-dried method followed by thermal chemical vapor deposition of methyltrichlorosilane at different relative humidity.The hydrophobic chitin sponges displayed an average pore size of 20 to 50 μm, high porosity greater than 98%, excellent elasticity and high mechanical durability.The sponges could collect a wide range of organic solvents and oils no matter on the surface or bottom of the water with absorption capacities up to 58 times of their own weight, depending on the density of the liquids.The materials could be reused after washing, recycled (with a recyclability of more than 10 times), or incinerated with the absorbed oil, showing promoting potential in environmental and sustainable applications
