One of the major challenges in oral and maxillofacial surgery is soft tissue deficiency problem that arise from a multitude of causes in the management of cleft palate deformity, facial cleft and major skeletal movement for correction of craniofacial syndromes. The use of self-inflating tissue expanders in animal models has been explored. These devices are potentially useful in overcoming soft tissue deficiency problems in clinical setting. The advantages in using these tissue expanders in oral and maxillofacial regions are numerous and will be discussed in greater detail (MoE Grant UM.C/625/1/HIR/MoE/Dent21).
