Type Ⅰ interferon (IFN-α/β) represents the key element of the antiviral defense against most viruses. However, rotaviruses that selectively infect the gut epithelium, display little sensitivity to type Ⅰ IFN but rather are restricted by type Ⅲ IFN (IFN-λ).This observation can be explained by our finding that unlike IFN-λ,IFN-α is unable to induce antiviral gene expression in intestinal epithelial cells due to low expression of both chains of the IFN-α/β receptor complex.
