Well-differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has an overall good prognosis, although it frequently spreads locally and recurs by metastasizing to local cervical lymph nodes. The only curative treatment for recurrent DTC is surgery, but repeated operations are considered as difficult because of severe fibrosis and distortion of normal tissue planes by scar formation, giving repeat surgeries a higher complication rate.Patients in the inoperable state for various reasons require any management for relief of symptoms and minimally invasive local therapy would be useful for this application. When reoperation is impossible, RF procedure with local anesthesia may become an option in patients with local DTC recurrence. The present investigation was designed to determine the role of RF procedure in patients with symptomatic recurrent DTC ineligible for surgery. The mean volume reduction was 50.9%.There were gains for symptom relief from 63.6% patients with protruding masses and discomfort due to tracheal compression. There were no significant major complications except a patient with skin bum. This preliminary results show that RFA is feasible, safe and can improve symptoms in the short-term.
