Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) is a 20-year-old U.S.Department of Agriculture program designed to develop information on sustainable farming practices that can have direct impact on American farmers.SARE arose from concern by the U.S.government and the public about unsustainable agriculture that degrades soil, disperses chemical pollution, depletes air and water resources, and depopulates rural America. The SARE program defines sustainable fanning as creating profit that builds the quality of life in rural communities and protects the environment. All SARE funded projects are cross disciplinary, requiring an outreach or educational component to communicate technical research results to a target population of interested farmers.
