Orthogonal polynomial series approach has been used to solve the guided wave propagation in various structures for about 20 years.But these structures have finite dimension in only one direction,such as horizontallyinfinite flat plates,axiallyinfinite hollow cylinders.Here,an extension of the orthogonal polynomial approach,double orthogonal polynomial approach,is proposed to solve wave propagation in waveguides with various 2D cross sections,i.e.,waveguides with a finite dimension in two directions,such as rectangular type,L type,and I-beam type rods,rods with fan-shaped cross-section,rings with rectangular cross sections.Simultaneously,the proposed method is extended to solve the corresponding piezoelectric structures,layered structures and functionally graded structures.Through numerical comparison with the available result,the validity of the extended polynomial approach is illustrated.The dispersion curves and displacement distributions in these structures are shown.
