中國的藻類學研究是從外國人研究中國的藻類開始的,到中國人自己主宰藻類學研究以及80年代在中國大陸舉辦世界海藻學術討論會,90年代在青島舉辦世界藻類大會,以及2010年在青島舉辦第九屆世界海洋生物技術大會,中國的藻類學研究已經取得了舉世矚目的成績.曾呈奎教授曾擔任國際藻類學會主席,這就是一個很好的例證.中國的藻類學研究面向國家的需求,面向百姓的需求,理論聯繫實際是一個非常顯著的特點.在這裡從國外移植的海带、螺旋藻分别成為世界栽培和養殖產量最大的大型海藻和微藻,這是中國藻類學研究和藻類產業發展的一個重要例證.
