Mutation breeding is one of the most important breeding approaches.Seeds of the inbred lines 76-2 melon (Cucumis melo var.ameri),with yellow peel,red flesh and no sour tease,were radiated by 60Co-γ ray at 584 Gy and 778 Gy at the Hami Melon Research Center of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Xinjiang,China) and gain a single melon with a taste of sweet and sour,red flesh and disease resistance (by surveys at the seedling stage).This variety offers a new,and potentially unique,germplasm that may prove valuable for melon breeding.As with many commercial plants,there is substantial interest in developing new melon varieties with desirable characteristics such as disease resistance and improved taste.
