The generation for water droplets wrapped by ionic liquid([BMIM][PF6])were investigated in a flow-focusing device by using a high-speed digital camera.Experiments were carried out in a square microchannel with cross section of 400×400 μm.The IL plays a dual role: surfactant and the continuous phase. No extra surfactant is needed to promote the emulsification formation. Results show that the film thickness increases with the flow rate of the continuous phase, which remarkably affects the stress distribution around the neck of droplet. The breakup behaviors of the neck of the dispersed phase for droplet formation could be divided into two stages: the squeezing collapse and the pinch-off stage. In the liquid squeezing collapse process, the variation of the minimum width of dispersed thread(wm)with the remaining time(τ)could be scaled by a power-law relationship and the exponent α increases with the flow rate of continuous phase(Ql).In the pinch-off stage, the variation of the minimum width of dispersed thread(wm)with the remaining time(τ)could be scaled as a linear relationship. This study on the water/IL two-phase microfluidic system would have a great potential for the applications in chemical analysis, material synthesis, and biological study, etc.
