Background: Celecoxib, selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, has been reported to reduce pain following dental extraction similar to that of nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate the analgesic effectiveness and cost of celecoxib 200mg, the recommended loading dose for treatment of acute pain, with that of loxoprofen 60mg following distraction osteogenesis of mandible and maxilla. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients who received oral dose of celecoxib or loxoprofen for postoperative pain after distraction osteogenesis of the mandible and maxilla from 2011 to 2013 in our hospital. They were divided into 2 groups; group C included patients who received oral celecoxib for postoperative pain; and group L included those who received loxoprofen for postoperative pain. Both groups took acetoaminophen or diclofenac as rescue analgesia if patient did not get enough postoperative pain relief from celecoxib or loxoprofen.
