Kenaf fibers reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by means of kenaf fibers, polypropylene fibers, nonwoven method and hot pressing technology. The alkali and silane coupling modifications were adopted to treat the kenaf fibers before the composites performing process. The effects of the concentrations of alkali and silane coupling on the mechanical properties of the kenaf fibers were studied. The influences of the alkali modification, silane coupling modification and the hybrid modification on the mechanical property of the kenaf/PP composite were evaluated. The flexural fracture surfaces and the adhesion were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that the alkali, silane and the hybrid modifications can improve the flexural strength of the composites. The alkali and silane modifications can increase the elongation of the composites. The silane and the hybrid modifications can improve the moduli of the composites. The fibers modifications can improve the interfacial bonding between the fibers and the PP resin.
