The term quorum sensing (QS) describes the cell density dependent control of gene expression through the production and transduction of chemical signal molecules.In many Gram negative bacteria the signal belongs to the N-acyl homoserine lactone class of molecules which are synthesised by members of the luxI family of AHL synthases and transduced by the luxR family of response regulators.
