Dieldrin is one of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs),used in the past as organochlorine insecticides in the world.In Japan,dieldrin was first registered in 1954.However,their use has been prohibited since 1975 due to their biological magnification,high toxicity and long persistence in the environment.Although dieldrin has not been used for over 30 years,it remains in soil and crops at levels exceeding the tolerable limit for pesticides are sometimes reported.Thus,residual dieldrin in farmlands is still a serious problem and an efficient method to remedy such soils is highly required.In this study,we aim to obtain fungal species capable of degrading dieldrin that could be useful for bioremediation,as bioremediation is known to be one of the cost-effective and efficient remediation technologies for soil contamination by persistent chemical compounds.
