Two major initiatives are under way to correct beta cell deficit: one would generate beta-cells ex vivo that are suitable for transplantation and the second would stimulate endogenous regeneration program for forming new beta cells in pancreas. The promise of human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is great but over the past few years the task of controlling their differentiation to functional beta cells has been daunting and far slower than originally thought.
