A Gram-negative bacterium, strain 9NM-10T, was isolated from an abandoned lead-zinc ore in Meizhou, Guangdong province, south China. The isolate was yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, motile, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and rod-shaped.Strain 9NM-10T grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 30 ℃ and in the absence of NaC1 on R2A agar.Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 9NM-10T belongs to the genus Sphingomonas, clustered with Sphingomonas japonica DSM 22753aT with highest sequence similarity (97.56%).
