As an influence of growing transnational migration, Korea which had long been considered the most ethnically and culturally homogeneous society in Asia has changed to an increasingly globalized and multicultural society. Especially in Seoul, the capital city of Korea, many ethnic places have been generated by various immigrant groups and diversified to Denizen and Margizen area according to the level of its social and economic status. The objective of this study is to examine and compare the elementary students informal cross-cultural experience and intercultural sensitivity according to the residential areas where the students live. This study surveyed 343 students from six different elementary schools across three different areas focused on ethnic places in Seoul- Denizen area (Japanese, French concentrated area), Margizen area(Islam street area, Korean-Chinese concentrated area) and Foreigner non-concentrated area using Cross-Cultural Life Experience Checklist which developed by Ward(1996) and Chen&Starostas Intercultural Sensitivity Scale(2000). The statistics obtained from each residential area were analyzed and compared to establish the correlation between the residential areas applying one-way ANOVA. It will be beneficial to provide implications for multicultural education that can more appropriately reflect the social and cultural context of each learner.
