A new Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) chromatography concept was developed which was characterized through only four pumps: a feed and an eluent pump for the inlet streams and an extract and a raffinate pump for the product streams.The 4-pump concept allowed all pumps were located outside of the loop.Therefore, the internal concentration profile was not disturbed, and it led to a higher separation performance.In this work, to exemplify the benefits of the new SMB concept, Ketoprofen racemate separation was studied in detail.Results showed that the purity of the separeated S-Ketoprofen was up to 99.9%, and R-Ketoprofen up to 98.2%.For the separation process, a steady state could be obtained through only 7-8 circles.It was also shown impressively that the SMB productivity was increased significantly while the eluent consumption was decreased.
