The Kerguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study (KEOPS) was conducted to assess the impact of a natural iron fertilization on the biological carbon pump. The KEOPS cruise was carried out in the South East of the Kerguelen Island (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean) from 19 January to 13 February 2005.The natural iron fertilization promoted a well developed bloom above the Kerguelen Plateau in contrast to the High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll conditions prevailing in the surrounding waters.High resolution surface fCO2 distribution obtained from underway measurements indicates that the naturally iron fertilized bloom was an important sink for CO2,with a mean fCO2 of 311 ± 8 μatm.
