The fracture modes and failure mechanism of joints are critical in determining their strength. For fiber-reinforced composite joints, fiber-dominated failure will result in quasi-static and fatigue strength significantly higher than matrix-dominated failure. This was validated based on previous work in Single Nested Overlap (SNO) joints, where the quasi-static strength showed an improvement of 5-10% compared to the single lap joint and the fatigue endurance showed an improvement of 20-25% for the family of graphite/epoxy [0/±θ/90]s.
