Purpose of the study was to find out the actual clinical and laboratory results of metal on metal bearings in resurfacing hip arthroplasties by comparing it with that of other implants.A total of 127 cases of metal on metal resurfacing arthroplasfies were performed at the department of Orthopaedics of Wuhan Union hospital,China from 2005 to 2011.There were two key findings in our Chinese experience.First, the chromium and cobalt level of resurfacing hip arthroplasty and large diameter head total hip arthroplasty (THA) are higher than conventional metal on polyethylene THA.Second, there were very high metal ion levels in the revision cases, which may be one of the main reasons for failure in hip resurfacing. The above two findings are novel and quite controversial with that of the previously published literature.
