A new unequally spaced and excited resonant slotted-waveguide antenna array is presented, and it is realized by employing a specially designed composite fight/left-handed (CRLH) waveguide. The CRLH waveguide is to work at the infinite wavelength frequency, thus the slot elements cut along the waveguide wall are all excited in-phase to generate a broadside beam. Both the element spacings and excitation amplitudes are introduced into the array synthesis to improve antenna performances. The genetic algorithm (GA) is used to yield suitable element spacings and excitations, which are then applied to implement two 8-element symmetric center-fed antenna arrays. The results show that obviously better antenna array performances can be obtained in comparison with the conventional resonant slotted-waveguide antenna array which must be equally spaced.
