Objective To study pharmacology and toxicology of extracts from Arcangelisia gusanlung H.S.Lo.Methods The anti-inflammatory activities were tested using various inflammatory models including ear swelling induced by xylene in mice, paw edema induced by carrageenan and cotton pellet granuloma in rats. The analgesic effect was tested in hot plate test and writhing test in mice. The antipyretic effect was observed in rats fever models induced by yeast. The antitussive action was tested in mice by sequential method and expectorant action was evaluated by tracheal excretion of phenol red.The anti-diarrhea function was observed on normal intestinal propulsion of mice and mouse models of diarrhea induced by decoction of Folium Sennae. The toxicity was measured by toxicological experiment. Results Each dose of Arcangelisia gusanhung H.S.Lo could significantly inhibit paw edema, cotton pellet granuloma and intestinal propulsion. It significantly reduced writhing times and amount of wet manure.Obvious antipyretic action to fevered rat was observed. It obviously increased tracheal excretion of phenol red and prolonged latency of cough. No toxic reaction was shown in the observed period, and the mouses maximum tolerance dose was equivalent to 1360 times of mans commonly-used dose. Conclusion Clinical use ofArcangelisia gusanhmg H.S.Lo.is safe,it has antitussive action, and its anti-inflammation,analgesia,antipyresis,expectorant and anti-diarrhea effects are significant.
