This paper explores the relationship between apartmentsenvironment and burglaries in Pudong New Area,Shanghai by sampling 60 burglarized apartments and 54 non-burglarized ones from data provided by Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau Pudong Branch.Based on preliminary quantitative analysis we select some representative cases to analyze the environments around them.It is found that natural surveillance and access control are two environmental factors with definite influence on burglary.Sufficient natural surveillance prevents burglaries from occurring;the better the visibility and the higher the level of activity, the better the natural surveillance.Strong access control also deters burglary, including high windows and good natural surveillance on accesses.
