Many non-phosgene strategies for isocyanate syntheses have been exploited for long time and one of the potentially enable processes is carbamate synthesis and then thermal decomposition which is key reaction step for the non-phosgene synthesis to afford corresponding isocyanates[1].In this work, a whole process has been developed for non-phosgene MDI syntheses,that is, catalytic syntheses of alkyl phenyl carbamate (APC)with aniline, urea and lower molecular weight alcohol, coupling APC with formaldehyde to yield diphenyl-methane-4,4-dicarbamate (MDC), and then thermal decompo sition of MDC for MDI (Fig.1).
