This paper reports the results of a survey of 418 residents of Hongcun,Anhui Province,relating to perceptions of tourisms impacts from the conceptual framework of place attachment.Hongcun is a small town of 400 households dating to 1131AD which became a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Visitation has increased to approximately 500,000 visitors per annum.The research finds evidence that those with the lowest place attachment,while recognizing economic benefits of tourism,are the most disturbed by the patterns of change induced by tourism to the point where they consider movement away from their home.The question is whether it is the impacts of tourism that induces this lowered sense of place attachment.The paper argues evidence for this exists and that it is the nuisance created by tourism in terms of crowding,noise and intrusion effects that creates this lowered sense of place attachment and which decreases feelings of being rooted in the community.
