Microlens array has wide applications in 3D display, optical communication, etc.A spherical or aspherical microlens could easily be simulated by means of light ray tracing. However in a gradient index(GRIN)microlens the light rays do not go straight. Its simulation becomes much more difficult. We demonstrate that both spherical microlens and GRIN microlens could be simulated by means of mode matching method(MMM).Using MMM we are able to calculate exact 2D light field distribution over the entire light path, which is beneficial to reveal in detail the performance of a microlens. We found from our simulation that the MMM results for a cylindrical mierolens was in good agreement with that by light ray tracing; The focal length of a GRIN microlens derived from 2D field distribution calculated by MMM also agreed well with preset value.
