This paper presents the zooarchaeological analysis of a double pipe found in a female grave in the Early Avar period (7th century AD) cemetery of Szegvár-Sz(o)l(o)kalja in South-East Hungary. This type of musical instrument is a characteristic grave donation (usually to burials of men) found in Avar period cemeteries in the eastern part of Hungary. The specimen under study was made from the matching pair of tarsometatarsi of a crane. This graceful species with its particular sound once was a common breeding bird on the Great Hungarian Plain. Its long and straight leg bones seem to have been an ideal raw material for manufacturing double pipes.
