The high degree of spatial variability of saturated hydraulic conductivity makes it necessary to obtain sufficient and reliable Ks for accurate flow and transport predictions since the quality of the modeling results could strongly depend on how well the natural variability of the Ks field is accounted for. However, direct in situ measurements of hydraulic conductivity in soils are difficult, time consuming and costly, thus this fundamental parameter is ordinarily observed at only a few locations.
