The effects of illumination are divided into visual effects and non-visual effects.Recently, quite a few studies focusing on the non-visual effects of illumination on humans have been done in the field of physiological anthropology. In 2002,intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells(ipRGCs),a novel type of photoreceptor cells, were found in the mammalian retina. It was found that ipRGCs respond to short-wavelength light of around 480 nm(blue light). The purpose of this study was to clarify the non-visual effects of blue-pulsed light. We studied the non-visual effects of blue-pulsed light on pupillary constriction(miosis),electroretinogram(ERG)and subjective evaluation during several experiments. We present some of the results of these experiments.
