Objective: Ameloblastomas are the most common slow growing, locally invasive, benign odontogentic tumors of epithelial origin within the oral cavity. They present in three different clinical and radiographic subsets: solid/multicystic, unicystic, and peripheral/extraosseous.Traditionally methods of treatment consist of enucleation and curettage and the delayed reconstruction. The conventional ameloblastomas tendency to infiltrate intact cancellous bone at the periphery of the lesion before bone resorption becomes radiographically evident leads to misdiagnosed margins making complete removal of the tumor via enucleation without the possibility of recurrence next to impossible. At the University of Maryland, the treatment of choice is surgical resection with 1cm margins.
