In the field of tourism geography, exploring the patterns of tourist movement in the space-time dimension has been regarded as an important research theme.Researchers have investigated such patterns on different scales and in different settings to clarify or characterize tourists movement patterns by using various instruments such as questionnaires,GPS loggers, and statistical data, and selected an appropriate analytical method for each. However, tourist movement in areas across multiple prefectures, such as metropolitan areas including a mega-city and peripheral sites, has not been sufficiently studied because of the difficulties of acquiring large data on tourist movement to(from)urban areas. In Japan, the recent development of services that provide data on people flow has enabled us to investigate human trajectories based on large samples.Using such data, this study clarifies the patterns of day trippers movements for sightseeing purposes in the Tokyo metropolitan area of Japan.
