Phenolic compounds in cigarette smoke have received considerable attention recently for their hazardous effects on smokers and passive smokers. In this paper, a method based on two-dimensional heart-cutting reversed-phased liquid chromatography was developed for the determination of main phenolic compounds in mainstream cigarette smoke.7 phenolic compounds in "Hoffmann list" including catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol and p-cresol were analyzed. The particulate phase of mainstream smoke was collected on a glass fiber filter pad, and extracted with 1% acetate solution (v/v) at an ultrasonic bath for 20 min. Then, the extracts were separated by a two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) system: A C 18 column was used in the first dimensional chromatography, with gradient elution using 1% acetic acid solution and acetonitrile as the mobile phase A and mobile phase B, respectively; a CN column was used in the second dimensional chromatography, with isocratic elution using 10% acetonitrile solution as the mobile phase.
