An amino acid,3S-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid, was isolated from the leaves of Cichorium endivia. The complete assignment of its NMR spectroscopic data was carried out for the first time.Cytotoxicity of this isolated compound against HCT-8 and HepG2 human cancer cell-lines was evaluated first, with moderate activities being found. The compound induces HCT-8 and HepG2 cells apoptosis through a mitochondria dependent pathway.Other mechanisms of anti-cancer activity induced by this compound are being explored.
