  In general,the running behaviors and damages of fretting wear can be revealed by two fretting maps,i.e.Running Condition Fretting Map (RCFM) and Material Responding Fretting Map (MRFM).In this paper,four types basic methods for alleviating damages of fretting wear were generalized as follows:avoiding the slip and mixed fretting regimes in RCFM,increasing surface strength of contact pairs,reducing friction coefficient of contact interface,and correcting materials choosing and matching of contact pairs.Among these alleviating manners,one of the best methods for reducing fretting damages is using surface engineering technologies.According to the RCFM and MRFM,the mechanisms for anti-wear and anti-friction of coatings under the condition of fretting are overviewed.As three typical examples,fretting wear mechanisms of bonded solid lubricant coatings,PVD TiN coatings and micro-arc oxidation coatings have been discussed in detail.
